Bike Safe Campaign: Tips for Riding on the Street with Cars

At Mobi by Rogers, we prioritize the safety of our riders. As part of our Bike Safe campaign, we’re sharing essential tips for riding safely on streets with cars. Follow these guidelines to ensure a safer and more enjoyable biking experience.

Be Aware of Cars Turning Right
When riding alongside cars, always be cautious of vehicles turning right. To stay safe:

  • Wait behind cars at intersections rather than trying to pass them on the right.
  • If you must pass, shoulder check and pass on the left.
Use Bike Boxes for Left Turns
Green bike boxes are designated spaces for cyclists at intersections, providing a safe spot to wait and increasing your visibility to drivers. When making a left turn:
  • Position yourself in the bike box at the intersection.
  • Wait for the light to change and proceed safely.
Stop for Pedestrians
In pedestrian-heavy areas, it’s crucial to slow down and yield to those on foot:
  • Always be prepared to stop.
  • Respect crosswalks and pedestrian right-of-way.

Avoid Dooring
“Dooring” occurs when a vehicle door is opened into the path of a cyclist. Prevent dooring accidents by:

  • Maintaining a distance of at least 1 meter from parked cars.
  • Staying alert for signs of parked cars with occupants inside.

General Safety Tips
In addition to the specific tips above, keep these general safety practices in mind while cycling:

  • Wear a helmet: Always protect your head by wearing a helmet.
  • Ride with traffic: Follow the flow of traffic and stay in designated bike lanes when possible.
  • Ride sober: Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Watch for car doors: Stay vigilant for parked cars and potential dooring hazards.
  • Stay off the sidewalk: Ride on the street to avoid conflicts with pedestrians.
  • Obey signs and signals: Follow all traffic signs and signals to ensure predictability and safety.
  • Use turn signals: Indicate your turns to drivers and other cyclists by using hand signals.
  • Exercise caution at intersections: Always approach intersections with care, making sure to look in all directions.
  • Yield to pedestrians: Always give pedestrians the right of way, especially in crosswalks and busy areas.

By following these tips, you can help create a safer environment for everyone on the road.
