Now more people can use public bike share to get more places

Mobi by Shaw Go, Vancouver’s public bike share program, will now be more accessible than ever before, thanks to the expansion to Commercial Drive, a reduction of the minimum age from 16 years old to 12 years old, and a partnership with Vancity to launch the Vancity Community Pass — a pilot program that aims to increase accessibility of bike share.

“We’ve seen a huge increase in people riding bikes in Vancouver and to meet the growing demand we’ve now expanded the Mobi network in East Van all the way to Commercial Drive,” says Mayor Gregor Robertson. “We’re also working to make our public bike share system more accessible and affordable, and I’d like to thank Vancity for supporting a new pilot program that will offer discounted passes to eligible Vancouver residents. This new program will provide another option for people who are looking for affordable, active and sustainable ways to get around our city.”

Vancity Community Pass

Supporting the Healthy City Strategy, the Vancity Community Pass is a one-year pilot program that aims to increase accessibility and affordability of bike share and include more people in an active outdoor lifestyle. During the pilot program, up to 300 “365 Day Plus” passes will be offered at $20 per year (regular price $159) to individuals and community partners that are eligible for the program.

“It’s been wonderful to see people embrace cycling as a healthy, convenient and sustainable way to get around the city,” says Vancity President and CEO Tamara Vrooman. “Supporting the public bike share program to make it more available has been a priority for us and we’re pleased more members of our community will be able to enjoy the many benefits of cycling.”

The pilot program will be reviewed throughout the year and will conclude in spring 2019, with the hope that it will become a permanent part of the public bike share program.

“We are proud to support our partners at the City of Vancouver and Vancity as they provide even more opportunities for residents of Vancouver to access Mobi by Shaw Go,” says Jay Mehr, President, Shaw Communications. “As presenting partner, we are thrilled at the way people have made Mobi by Shaw Go a part of their day to day lives, and we look forward to seeing even more residents and visitors experience a modern and eco-friendly way to enjoy this great city.”

Eligibility for the program

Eligibility for the Vancity Community Pass program will be based on proof of enrollment in the Leisure Access Pass Program, proof of Red Compass Card ownership, or referral from an official community partner. Other eligibility requirements may be added.

Minimum age and height requirements

Additionally, to further support access to public bike share for families and people of all ages, Mobi by Shaw Go has reduced the minimum age to ride a Mobi bike from 16 years old to 12 years old.

A parent or legal guardian is required to purchase the pass, and confirm that the rider aged 12 thru 18 meets the minimum height requirement and is capable of safely riding an adult-sized bike.
