BIKESAFE Announcement
Vancity signs on for one-year bike share sponsorship
BIKESAFE program promotes safe riding

Vancouver Bike Share and Vancity today announced a one-year partnership with Vancity as the Education and Safety Community Sponsor of ‘Mobi by Shaw Go’, the City of Vancouver’s public bike share system.

Vancouver Bike Share Inc., the Mobi operator, is launching their BIKESAFE program today with Vancity’s support, encouraging users to practice safe cycling while riding a Mobi bike. The safety tips and content of the program are being provided in partnership with HUB Cycling (formally Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition), a charitable non-profit cycling organization in Metro Vancouver that has a mission to make cycling better through education, action and events.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Vancity as a community sponsor of our public bike share program,” says Jerry Dobrovolny, general manager, engineering services for the City of Vancouver. “Bike share is really taking off in Vancouver, and the involvement of community-minded sponsors like Vancity will only make it more successful,” he added.

“Vancity is proud to partner with Mobi and the City of Vancouver on the BIKESAFE program because sustainable transportation is a key part of building healthier communities. BIKESAFE will provide fundamental tips and resources to promote safe city riding, while encouraging new cyclists to get on the road,” says William Azaroff, Vancity’s executive lead, member experience & community engagement.

Bike share programs across North America typically engage corporate sponsors to ensure program sustainability. Shaw Communications became the official presenting sponsor of Mobi in December 2016.

“We are excited to have Vancity on board as a sponsor, and are proud to be working closely with another great company that is so committed to supporting our community,” says Mia Kohout, general manager, Vancouver Bike Share. “There are a lot of novice and new riders trying Mobi, and we want to encourage safe and happy riding. This program really addresses the need to educate our customers and the community at large on safe cycling practices.”

BIKESAFE program details and safety videos are available at mobibikes.ca/en/bikesafe. Mobi members and the community at large are encouraged to follow along for safety tips by following the hashtag #BIKESAFE. As well as inputting into the BIKESAFE program, Hub Cycling offers Streetwise Cycling courses to help people build the skills and confidence to cycle on the road.

Vancouver’s bike share program launched Summer 2016 and despite an unseasonably wet and snowy winter has already racked up 227,000 total rides or trips to date, more than double the 100,000 rides that were reached by the end of October 2016.
